Asemănarea e izbitoare :)

The BuddyPress Courseware today got it’s home, along with the first stable version: 0.1

I’m very happy to report that this was an awesome experience, and the final results kick ass.
Not to forget my mentors that helped a lot during the last 3 months: Jeremy Boggs and Boone B. Gorges, and a whole community of colleagues!

• Cât de mare este comunitatea?
• Cât de simplu e să obții asistență sau să găsești persoane serioase pentru proiecte serioase?
• Cât costă serviciile?
• Unde pot găzdui proiectele pe WordPress în România?

Cel mai simplu răspuns ar fi că: „Nu se știe exact cât de mare este comunitatea, numărul dezvoltatorilor în România și calificarea acestora sau costul serviciilor”. Cert e că WordPress e la fel de popular în România ca în toată lumea (8% din Internet include și .ro-ul), și din acest motiv a fost creat, acum ceva vreme, forumul WordPress în Română.

Astfel, utilizatorii WordPress pot primi atât asistență de la membrii forumului, cât și publica anunțurile despre proiectele personale/comerciale în scopul solidificării comunității și extinderii acesteia. Așadar, acum există un loc unde se pot întâlni persoanele WordPress atât mai tehnice cât și simplii utilizatori.

De asemenea, sincer sper ca anul acesta WordCamp România să aibă o continuare, iar ce-i care ne cunoaștem mai mult offline, să ajungem să ne întâlnim la eveniment față în față.

So what coding exactly I’m doing this summer? Remember Moodle, or Blackboard (yep, that was new to me too) or if you know what is a LMS, well, I am building a LMS above the BuddyPress social network. This means everyone can get a facebook/ning and a moodle in a box once the project is done.

The crew. Besides me there are two more mentors:

• Jeremy Boggs — The initiator of ScholarPress project from where I will borrow code and implementation ideas.
• Boone Gorges — The all things BuddyPress guy.

and a bunch of people I have to mention for their support and ideas: Jane, Kyle, WP-Edu subscribers.

FLOSSCamp 2009

FLOSSCamp is the only FLOSS community oriented event in Romania, organised by some Free Software communities for people with the same interests . During last 2 editions, about 100 people gathered together for a couple of days camping in the mountains. This year is no exception, so we’re waiting for at least the same number of campers to come to Brașov, Poiana Secuilor, on (6,)7-8th of August. I will be there as part of Ubuntu and WordPress Romanian local teams, and hopefuly will meet more new people.

Încearcă

Acum imediat 2 ani (ZOMG!!!), Alex anunță primul proiect gen Deb-a-Day în .ro care are menirea:

„Încearcă software liber!” este pagina pe care găsești prezentări ale programelor libere, descrise de către cei care le folosesc și le iubesc. Scopul acestei pagini este de a promova software-ul liber într-o manieră prietenoasă și practică. Chiar dacă majoritatea programelor libere rulează pe sisteme GNU/Linux sau *BSD, aici vor fi prezentate aplicații indiferent de platforma pe care rulează.

În 2 ani proiectul:

• a schimbat 3 redactori,
• a avut câteva contribuții de la colegii din comunitate,
• are cam 70 de articole,
• are peste 25 mii de unici,
• are aprox. 60 mii de vizualizări,
• are aprox. 50 (+ ~30 de pe planet) de abonați la flux constant (neoficial de la google) și 65 pe twitter.

Toate acestea nu ar fi posibile dacă nu erau 2 Alex (1 și 2) și o comunitate care a susținut și consideră proiectul o resursă inedită pentru informare. Acum să nu fiu luat drept nașpa, explicați-mi și mie cineva de ce este nevoie o copie a proiectului „Încearcă”?

Să revin la întrebarea lui Nicu, „We’ve been free since 2008, good morning darling…”.

Along time I received a couple of questions regarding different setups, most of them resulted into an experience I started to share basically using a setup example below. The classic situation usually is a single server with two HDDs and such requirements like ability to snapshot, backup along with RAID and LVM stuff included.

About half a year ago, what I wrote above helped me and other friends understand a complex setup with OpenVZ, so I said to publish it now on my blog. There might be questions, if so just ask.
